The Cavalcata di Sant’Oronzo (Saint Orontius horse ride) is the most important festival of the town of Ostuni that celebrates the patron saint with a parade, music in the square and fireworks.
The festival starts today, on Friday, 24th, at 19.30h, with the concert of Surbo town’s music band infront of the Cathedral.
On Sunday, the 26th, a procession of caparisoned horses and riders start the Ride parading through the streets of the town and escorting the papier mache statue of Sant’ Oronzo. According to the tradition, it is an ancient gratitude manifestation to the saint, whose intercession had the effect of savings Ostuni and other towns of the Otranto area by a terrible plague in the second half of the XVII century. Historical figures for this event are the riders with their elegant costumes. As the tradition, the parade will end with fireworks.
This year’s Cavalcata will conclude on Monday, 27 August with the concert of a singer-songwriter Ron (21.30h, nel Foro Boario – GPS coordinates: 40.735747 Lat, 17.575395 Long; free entrance).
